Halloween is only just over, which is the cue for Christmas to explode in the shops. In town on 1st November there were suddenly Christmas trees, decorations and sparkle everywhere. I sighed internally for about a minute before the chill in the air made me feel unexpectedly properly Christmassy, even as I was still wearing my Tatty Devine ghost necklace.
In Next looking for new kids school shoes, I saw these beauties. I’ve never bought Next nail varnishes before, in fact I’ve never even noticed that they sell them. Maybe they’re new, or maybe I’ve just missed them. I’m not usually one for buying glittery nail varnishes either (I’m thinking about the hassle of getting them off as soon as I put them on), but these were beautiful. And on a “Buy Two Get One Free” offer as well. I bought some for me and some for a friend of mine going through a hard time, for which I thought unnecessary frippery could help at least a tiny bit. It usually helps me.
I was impressed with these. I’ve been put off glitter before because what looks sparkly and beautiful in the bottle can be pretty sparse without multiple coats on the nail. But the glitter in these is very dense, and after two coats my nails were properly encrusted.
The Cosmic Matte Glitter is my favourite – matte glitter being an unusual concept, and it’s a beautiful grey base covered with green, blue and purple flecks. It reminded me of being in Cuba and being amazed with the unpolluted night sky. I love anything to do with space, but I had no idea the sky could look like that – so many stars shining so brightly it was hard to make out any constellations at all.
Holy Smoke is what I have on right now, it’s a warm grey with subtle and tiny purple shimmers running through it. The nicest grey I’ve worn, I think.
All of the colours say that they are “hard-wearing” on the bottle and they’re right. I’ve only just taken off Cherry Pie after five days, and I didn’t have a single chip in all that time. It’s a dark red sheer tint which is unusual and lovely too. A translucent but strong Ruby red, it’s like the nail version of Benetint.
And it’s as good a reason as any to post this song of the same name, from the just completely cool Katzenjammer. I’m seeing them in Manchester in a week, and I can’t wait…
